Order Lacertidae, Family Lacertidae. A relatively large lizard that grows to about 50 cm in length, it moves rather sluggishly. Its back is grey or brown, with 7-9 black bands on its body and 7-10 on its tail. It eats small animals such as insects, as well as nuts, leaves, and mushrooms. It is ovoviviparous, giving birth to around 10 baby lizards. It is found in northern and eastern Australia, is diurnal, and lives in a variety of environments from grasslands to forests. There are several other species of blue-tongued skinks, but almost all of them are endemic to Australia.

トカゲ目トカゲ科。体長 50cmぐらいになる比較的大型のトカゲで，動きはやや鈍重。背面は灰色ないし褐色で，胴に7～9本，尾に7～10本の黒っぽい帯紋がある。昆虫などの小動物のほか，木の実や葉，キノコなども食べる。卵胎生で，10匹前後の子トカゲを産む。オーストラリア北部から東部にかけて分布し，昼行性で，草地から森林までさまざまな環境にすむ。なお，アオジタトカゲの仲間はほかにも何種かあるが，そのほとんどすべてがオーストラリアに固有である。
