Gelsenkirchen (English spelling)

A mining and industrial city in North Rhine-Westphalia in mid-west Germany. Population 274,900 (2002). Located in the center of the Ruhr industrial region, the most important industry is coal mining. Other industries include related steel, steel processing, chemicals, glass, and after World War II, the garment industry also became important. The area was a farming village until 1840, but the town subsequently expanded in a disorderly manner along with the coal mining and heavy chemical industries. To dispel this bad reputation, the city has built public areas with a zoo and a modern theater, and is working to improve the town and living conditions.

ドイツ中西部、ノルトライン・ウェストファーレン州の鉱工業都市。人口27万4900（2002）。ルール工業地帯の中央部に位置し、もっとも重要な産業は石炭業である。工業はこれと関連する鉄鋼業、鉄鋼加工、化学、ガラス工業などのほか、第二次世界大戦後は衣服工業も重要となった。この地域は1840年までは農村であったが、その後、石炭業、重化学工業とともに市街地が無秩序に広がった。この悪名をそそぐべく、動物園や近代的な劇場のある公共地区などを建設し、市街地と生活条件の整備に努めている。
