Japanese: 曾我物 - そがもの

This refers to a dramatized version of the story of the Soga brothers Juro and Goro's revenge. It originated in Noh and Kōwaka dance, and is also found in many puppet theatres and Kabuki plays. In particular, in Kabuki, the element of faith in the spirits came into play because Goro was connected to them. Since the Kyohō period (1716-1736), it became customary for every theater in Edo to perform a Soga monogatari every New Year, and so there are a huge number of Soga monogatari plays of various kinds. The main reason for its popularity is that the story of the brothers' struggle to avenge their father's death attracted the sympathy of the people at the time, but the love scenes centered around Juro and the heroic and dynamic scenes (aragoto) with Goro as the main character were also factors. Representative current works include "Yanone," "Sukeroku Yukari no Edo Sakura," and "Kusazuribiki."

曾我十郎・五郎兄弟の仇討ちに関する物語を脚色した作品をいう。古くは能楽，幸若舞曲に始り，人形浄瑠璃，歌舞伎作品にもきわめて多い。ことに歌舞伎では，五郎が御霊と通ずることから御霊信仰の要素も作用し，享保期 (1716～36) 以後，江戸の各劇場で正月に必ず曾我物を上演するならわしが生じたため，曾我物は各種おびただしい数に上る。兄弟の仇討ちにいたる苦心の物語が，当時の人々の同情を集めたのが人気の主因であるが，十郎を中心とした恋愛の場面，五郎を主人公とする勇壮豪快な局面 (荒事) も，その一因であった。現行の代表的な作品には『矢の根』『助六由縁江戸桜 (すけろくゆかりのえどざくら) 』『草摺引』などがある。
