King of France (reigned 1715-1774). Great-grandson of Louis XIV. His reign, which began with the regency of Philippe, Duke of Orléans, saw economic prosperity, but the country was embroiled in the Seven Years' War and lost many colonies, leading to a depletion of the national treasury and the preparations for the internal collapse of the absolute monarchy. In terms of philosophy, this was the period of the Enlightenment.
