Rock paintings and engravings are widely distributed in the mountainous region of the Sahara Desert, and are also called Saharan art. They remain in Tassili n'Ajjer, Hoggar, and South Oran (all in Algeria), Adrar Desiphores (Mali), Aïr (Niger), the Tibesti Mountains, Ennedi (all in Chad), Fezzan (Libya), Adrar de Mauritanie et Stouf (Mauritania), and in southern Morocco. The paintings are on the walls in the shade of rocks, and most of the engravings are on free-standing rock masses. …
