In Sanskrit, it originally means profit, wealth, auspiciousness, etc. In Hindu mythology, it is said to be the name of the goddess of fertility and prosperity. According to one theory, she was a goddess worshipped by the indigenous people before the Aryan invasion of India. She is considered the consort of the god Vishnu and is often called Lakshmi, but it is said that Sri and Lakshmi were originally separate goddesses. She has also been adopted into Buddhism, where she is called Kisshoten. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
