A bird of the Phasianidae family in the order Galliformes. Native to North America, wild species live in grasslands and forests, with a wingspan of about 50 cm. It was domesticated in America and brought to Europe in the 16th century. It is widely raised in Europe and the United States as a meat bird, and is often used in harvest festivals and Christmas dishes. Mature turkeys can reach 10 to 15 kg. They have a fleshy bump on their head and a wattle on their neck, which changes color from bright red to white (hence the name turkey). Females do not have a fleshy bump or wattle, and are small in size. The plumage color varies depending on the breed, and there are bronze turkeys (the largest of all turkeys), large white turkeys, and Narragansett turkeys. The wild population has decreased, and today they live in the southern United States and Mexico. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
