A container for transporting and storing liquids such as sake and soy sauce. It is cylindrical and made of wood such as cedar, cypress, or cherry, and has a lid. Before cans and bottles became widespread, it was used to store and transport brewed products, but even today it is prized as a container that preserves the delicate quality of sake and soy sauce. There are also ceremonial sake barrels with a handle on top that also serves as a decoration for hanging them, and barrels with a bulging center like a beer barrel.
