...It was only in the 20th century that it started to attract attention again. For example, in the UK, director Stephen Joseph remodeled the Victoria Theatre in Stoke-on-Trent and opened the amphitheater in 1962. However, the most notable examples are in the United States, where there are many examples such as the Penthouse Theatre, founded by Glenn Hughes at the University of Washington in Seattle in 1940, the amphitheater built in Dallas by female director Margo Jones in 1947, the Circle in the Square in New York (completed in 1951), and the Arena Stage in Washington (1961).
