Koizumi Chikashi

Japanese:
Koizumi Chikashi

Poet. Born into a farming family in Chiba Prefecture. His real name was Ikutaro. After working as a substitute teacher at an elementary school, he moved to Tokyo in 1908 (Meiji 41) and later worked for the Water Rescue Association. He studied under Ito Sachio and was a leading poet in the early days of Araragi, contributing to its advancement into the world of poetry. In 1924 (Taisho 13), he left the magazine and joined Nikko, and in 1926 formed the Aogaki Society, but died before the magazine's launch. His works were characterized by their supple melody and the way he sang about the everyday emotions of ordinary people, and many of his masterpieces were written in his later years while on his sickbed. In addition to his self-selected collection of poems, Kawa no Hotori (By the River) (1925), he also published Rooftop Earth (1928), Seigyu Shu (Blue Cow Collection) (1933), and a posthumous collection of writings, Zuien Shu (1930).
