The largest city on the island of Sardinia, located in the Gulf of Cagliari, on the southern coast of the island in western Italy. It is the capital of the Sardinia region and the province of Cagliari. The city is surrounded by lagoons on both the east and west. It is Italy's largest producer of sea salt. It has a good harbor and exports mineral products such as zinc and lead produced in the area. Food processing, ceramics, and bicycle industries are active. It is the starting point of a railway to the north and west of the island, and also has a naval and air force base. In the north of the city are the remains of a Roman amphitheater, as well as a medieval castle and a cathedral. It is also home to the National Archaeological Museum. Founded by the Phoenicians, it later became the main center of Carthaginian activity, but was taken over by the Romans in 238 BC. It is famous for the festival of Saint Eficio, which is held in honor of the island's guardian deity. Population: 156,488 (2011 estimate).

イタリア西部，サルジニア島南岸，カリアリ湾にのぞむ同島最大の都市。サルジニア州の州都でカリアリ県の県都。市の東西を潟に囲まれる。イタリア第1の海塩産地。良港があり，付近から産出される亜鉛，鉛をはじめとする鉱産物を輸出する。食品加工，窯業，自転車工業などが行われる。島の北部や西部に通じる鉄道の起点で，海軍および空軍基地もある。市の北部にはローマ時代の円形劇場の跡があり，ほかに中世の城や聖堂などがある。国立考古学博物館も所在。フェニキア人によって基礎が築かれ，のちカルタゴ人の活動の主要な中心をなしたが，前 238年にローマ人の手に移った。同島の守り神を祀る聖エフィシオ祭が行われることで有名。人口 15万6488（2011推計）。
