Cagliari (English spelling)
The largest city on the island of Sardinia, located in the Gulf of Cagliari, on the southern coast of the island in western Italy. It is the capital of the Sardinia region and the province of Cagliari. The city is surrounded by lagoons on both the east and west. It is Italy's largest producer of sea salt. It has a good harbor and exports mineral products such as zinc and lead produced in the area. Food processing, ceramics, and bicycle industries are active. In the north of the city are the remains of a Roman amphitheater, as well as a medieval castle and a cathedral. It is also home to the National Archaeological Museum. Founded by the Phoenicians, it later became the main center of Carthaginian activity, but was taken over by the Romans in 238 BC. It is famous for the festival of Saint Eficio, which is held in honor of the island's guardian deity. Population: 156,488 (2011 estimate).
