A leading Italian shipbuilding company. It was founded in 1853 as a machine factory in Genoa under the Kingdom of Sardinia. Its founder was Giovanni Ansaldo (1815-59). With the support of Cavour, it began producing locomotives. It then developed into a shipyard under government protection, and then diversified into steel and mining. It made great strides along with Fiat during World War I, thanks to military production. However, after the war, in 1921, it fell into crisis following the bankruptcy of Banco Italiano, with which it had had a close relationship.
