Proliferation

Japanese: 増殖 - ぞうしょく（英語表記）proliferation

This refers to the proliferation of cells of the same nature through cell division. The increase in population is usually distinguished from reproduction. The proliferation of cells within the body of a multicellular organism, and the generation of new cytoplasm within a cell are also distinguished as growth, but from the perspective of cell proliferation, proliferation is the same during the developmental stage of a multicellular organism when differentiation does not occur. Cell proliferation is usually regulated so that, when it reaches a certain stage, the characteristics change (differentiation). Even when cells live independently, proliferation does not continue indefinitely, and in the natural environment, a certain equilibrium state is often maintained.

細胞が分裂して同質のものがふえることをいう。個体数のふえるのは通常，生殖 reproductionとして区別する。また多細胞生物の体内で細胞がふえていくことや，また細胞内で細胞質が新生していく場合には成長 growthとして区別するが，細胞がふえるという点からみると，多細胞生物の発生期で分化が起らない時期には，増殖といっても同じである。細胞が増殖して，ある時期に達すると形質が変化していく (分化) ように，制御されているのが常である。また細胞が独立して生活している場合でも，増殖は無限に続くことはなく，自然環境のなかで一定の平衡状態を保っている場合が多い。
