Secret illustrated words of the Hosso sect

Japanese: 法相宗秘事絵詞 - ほっそうしゅうひじえことば

This illustrated scroll from the late Kamakura period tells the story of Tripitaka Master Xuanzang, who traveled to China in search of the Dharma during the Tang Dynasty and worked to translate the Sanskrit scriptures he brought with him into Chinese. Formerly known as the "Illustrated Guide to Tripitaka Master Xuanzang," it is also known as the "Illustrated Secrets of the Hosso Sect" because Xuanzang is revered as the founder of the Hosso sect and the scroll describes his deeds. It was kept secretly at Kofuku-ji Daijo-in, the center of the Hosso sect in Japan, and is currently in the collection of the Fujita Museum of Art in Osaka. It consists of 12 volumes, and it condenses the great deeds of Xuanzang's life from his departure from the Tang capital Chang'an to his travels through the Western Regions and India, all the way to his return home, and it gives detailed portrayals of his studies in India, the state of Buddhist sites in various places, and the extremely difficult journey.

中国唐代，法を求めて入竺し，請来した梵本経典の漢訳に努めた玄奘三蔵の伝記を説いた，鎌倉時代後半の絵巻。古くは《玄奘三蔵絵》と呼ばれていたが，玄奘は法相宗の開祖と仰がれ，その行業を著すことから《法相宗秘事絵詞》とも称する。日本の法相宗の中心である興福寺大乗院に秘蔵され，現在は大阪の藤田美術館の所蔵となっている。全12巻から成り，玄奘の一生のうちでも，唐都長安を発して西域，インドを遍歴し，帰国するまでの偉大な事跡を集約的に取り上げ，インドでの教学や各地の仏跡の様相，あるいは困難を極めた旅行の途次を詳細に描き出している。
