A school of thought advocated by the early modern Confucian scholar Yamazaki Ansai. It is also called Kimonology. Ansai followed Confucius's "state but do not create" approach as his own academic style, and rather than creating his own unique views, he carefully read Zhu Xi's commentaries on the Four Books, Zhu Xi's collected writings and words, and compiled and published excerpts of Zhu Xi-related documents by topic. His major work, Wen Hui Pil Lu, is an encyclopedia of Cheng-Zhuism from this perspective. While he made efforts to compile theories of Cheng-Zhuism, he also made efforts to compile theories of Shintoism as a Japanese teaching (Suika Shinto), and believed that the essence of Taoism could be clarified by coexisting theoretical Confucianism and mystical Shintoism.
