...The works of Fautrier and Bors during and immediately after the war are pioneering examples, but the former was critical of the Informel movement, and the latter died young. The Informel movement refers to the activities of Georges Mathieu (1921- ), Hans Hartung (1904-89), Giuseppe Capogrossi (1900-72), and Jean-Paul Riopelle (1923- ), who built on the work of these pioneers. With the help of the writings of Tapié (Un art autre, 1952) and Mathieu (Beyond Tachisme, 1963), the term quickly spread throughout Europe, and came to mean abstract painting itself from the 1950s to the early 1960s. ...
