Bernstorff

Japanese: ベアンストーフ
Bernstorff
1735‐97
A Danish politician born in Hanover. In 1758, he was invited by his uncle J.H. Bernstorff to enter the Danish service, where, as Minister of Foreign Affairs (1773-80), he improved relations with Russia and promoted a policy of neutrality. After the fall of his political rival, Gruber, in 1784, he served again as Minister of Foreign Affairs under Regent Frederick until his death. In 1794, he concluded a neutrality alliance with Sweden, which allowed Norway to avoid the effects of the French Revolution and contributed to the improvement of the Norwegian economy and land reform.
