A town in Mogami District, in north-central Yamagata Prefecture. The Mogami River flows northwest and joins the Oguni River. Funagata, the town's center, developed as a post station on the Ushu Kaido road, and is on the Ou Main Line and Rikuu East Line, and is the intersection of National Highways 13 and 47. Rice and vegetable cultivation is practiced here. The town sustained damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 119.04 km2 . 6,164 people (2010).
