A town in Mogami District, in north-central Yamagata Prefecture. The Mogami River flows northwest and joins the Oguni River. Funagata, the town's center, developed as a post station on the Ushu Kaido road, and is on the Ou Main Line and Rikuu East Line, and is the intersection of National Highways 13 and 47. Rice and vegetable cultivation is practiced here. The town sustained damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 119.04 km2 . 6,164 people (2010). 山形県中北部,最上郡の町。最上川が北西流し,小国(おぐに)川が合流する。中心の舟形は羽州街道の宿駅として発達,奥羽本線,陸羽東(りくうとう)線が通じ,国道13号線と47号線の交差地。稲作,野菜栽培を行う。東日本大震災で,町内において被害が発生。119.04km2。6164人(2010)。
