A school established by a missionary organization as a means of spreading and evangelizing a religion. It usually refers to Christian schools, particularly those established and run in non-Christian lands. In the sense of a religious school, there are Buddhist and Shinto schools in Japan, but the term "mission school" is used to mean the same thing as a Christian school. The same is true in China, Korea, and other countries where Christian educational institutions were established in the second half of the 19th century.
