Born: August 26, 1885, Haute-Loire, Saint-Julien-Chapteuil
[Died] August 14, 1972. Paris. French novelist, poet, and playwright. His real name was Louis Farigoule. He studied at the École Normale Supérieure (Higher Normal School) and taught for a time. He advocated unanimism, which recognizes a sense of universal unity and a collective consciousness that transcends the individual, and joined the Abbaye school. In addition to the poetry collections La Vie unanime (1908), Odes et prières (13), and the satirical masterpiece Knock, or the Triumph of Medicine (23), his most important work is the epic novel Les Hommes de bonne volonté (27 volumes, 32-47). This masterpiece depicts the history of Europe from 1908, when the footsteps of World War I began to echo in the Balkans, to 1933, when Hitler came to power, again predicting another world war. Member of the Académie Française (46).
