Eilema fuscodorsalis (roof shriveled moth)

Japanese: ヤネホソバ(屋根細翅) - ヤネホソバ（英語表記）Eilema fuscodorsalis

An insect of the family Arctiidae in the order Lepidoptera. Its wingspan is 2-3cm. The spring type is large, with gray scales scattered on an orange-yellow or pale yellow background, and the front edge is often yellow in a band, while the summer type is small, with a wingspan of about 2cm, and the forewings are often orange-brown. It is widely distributed from the southern part of the Tohoku region to the west, and is often found in the plains. Adults emerge three times a year, in spring, early summer, and early fall, and often fly to lights. The larvae are hairy caterpillars that feed on lichen, and their body color is very similar to that of lichen. They often emerge on moss growing on thatched roofs, roof tiles, and wooden fences, and hang down threads into houses, causing skin inflammation with the stinging hairs of the larvae.

鱗翅目ヒトリガ科の昆虫。翅の開張2～3cm。春型は大きく，前翅は橙黄色または淡黄色の地に灰色鱗を散布し，前縁部だけが帯状に黄色のことが多いが，夏型は開張2cm内外と小さく，前翅は橙褐色のことが多い。東北地方南部以西に広く分布し，平野部に多い。成虫は春，初夏および初秋の3回発生し，よく灯火に飛来する。幼虫は地衣類を食べる毛虫で，体色が地衣とそっくりである。わらぶき屋根，屋根瓦，板塀などに生えたコケによく発生し，糸をたらして人家内に垂下してくるため，幼虫の刺毛によって皮膚に炎症が起こる。
