Small-eared zorro

Japanese: コミミイヌ（英語表記）small‐eared zorro

A mammal of the carnivorous canid family with short, dark-colored ears and limbs. It lives in the forests of the Amazon and Orinoco river basins. Body length: 72-100 cm, tail length: 25-35 cm, height: about 36 cm, weight: about 9 kg. A primitive canid thought to be closely related to bush dogs and crab-eating dogs, it has relatively short limbs and a long body, and a thick tail that touches the ground when hung down. Its teeth are large and its chewing muscles (temporal muscles) are well developed, making its head appear large, and its ears are short, wide, and rounded for a canine. Its body hair is short, its whole body is dark gray-brown to blackish brown, its underside is reddish brown, and it has light-colored spots below the eyes and at the base of the underside of the tail.

耳介と四肢が短く暗色の食肉目イヌ科の哺乳類。アマゾン川とオリノコ川の流域の森林にすむ。体長72～100cm，尾長25～35cm，体高約36cm，体重約9kg。ヤブイヌ，カニクイイヌなどに近縁と思われる原始的なイヌ類で，四肢が比較的短くて胴が長く，太い尾は垂らすと先が地に着く。歯が大きく，かむ筋肉(側頭筋)がよく発達しているため頭は大きく見え，耳介がイヌ類としては短くて幅が広く丸みがある。体の毛は短く，全身暗灰褐色～黒褐色で，体の下面は赤褐色を帯び，目の前下方と尾の下面基部に淡色斑がある。
