Flowing through - Kanryu

It is a branch of the Ito-ryu Kudayari, a school of spearmanship practiced in the Owari domain in the early modern period. Its founder was Tsuda Gonnojo Nobuyuki (1655-98), a samurai of the Owari domain. It is also called the Owari Nuki-ryu or Tsuda-ryu. Nobuyuki was the second son of Tsuda Tarozaemon, a horseman, and had a love of martial arts since he was a child. He first learned spearmanship from Todoroki Kanbei, a disciple of Ito-ryu Torao Magobei Sanyasu, and after Kanbei left Owari, he followed Saburikichibei Tadamura, and obtained his license in 1670 (Kanbun 10) at the age of 16. He continued to practice and refine his technique, eventually coming to understand the principle of consistency in all long and short horizontal techniques, and realizing the secret of the art of movement, he established a new school, which he called the Kanryu. In 1692 (Genroku 5), at the age of 38, he was promoted to spear magistrate and was awarded a stipend of 300 koku. He died in July 1698, at the age of 44. During the time of his son, Gonnojo Chikanobu, he became the instructor for the feudal lord Tokugawa Yoshimichi, and the style was widely practiced throughout the domain, but because it was forbidden to teach it to warriors from other domains without permission, it was also called the "Otome-ryu" (priest school), and this rule was closely followed by successive heads of the family, even until the end of the Edo period.
