White pottery

White earthenware made in China. This type of earthenware appeared as early as before the Longshan culture, mainly in eastern regions such as Shandong Province, but it developed in the late Yin period, and extremely fine pieces were created. Known examples were excavated as grave goods from large and medium-sized tombs at the Yin Ruins in Anyang. They are made using kaolin clay (porcelain clay) with a low iron content similar to that of ceramics, and are fired hard at high temperatures of over 1000°C. The shapes of the vessels include dou (bean), ki (green), rai (black), zun (red), and yu (green), and the surfaces are engraved with taotie, liu (red dragon), and thunder patterns, which are similar to the ceremonial bronze vessels of the Yin period, making them a precious item with no practical use.

中国でつくられた白色の土器。この系統の土器は、早くは山東省など東方の地域を中心に、竜山(りゅうざん)文化期以前から現れているが、殷(いん)代後期に至って発達し、きわめて精美な作品がつくりだされた。安陽の殷墟(いんきょ)における大型・中型墓の副葬品として出土した例が知られる。陶磁器のそれに近い鉄分の少ない高嶺(カオリン)土（磁土）を用いて、1000℃を超える高温で堅く焼かれている。器形に豆(とう)、簋(き)、罍(らい)、尊、卣(ゆう)などがあり、また表面を饕餮(とうてつ)文、虺竜(きりゅう)文、雷(らい)文などで刻飾することは、殷代の儀礼用の青銅器と通じており、実用を離れた宝器的な存在であった。
