…a general term for pottery, earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain, made of plastic clay that is molded into a specific shape and then fired at high temperatures. It is also commonly called yakimono.

...In Japan, the term "douki" (earthenware) was first used to mean unglazed pottery and to distinguish it from glazed pottery from the latter half of the Edo period. The Chinese word "do" and the English words "pottery," "ceramic," and "earthenware" all refer to both earthenware and pottery as they are called in Japan.

Because earthenware is characterized by its porosity, efforts are made during its production to reduce the porosity and make it dense.
