A bird of the family Strigidae (illustration). Total length is about 72 cm. Females are particularly large, with a wingspan of 1.8 m and weight of up to 4 kg. They are distributed over most of Eurasia except the polar regions, and over North Africa. They have been recorded as vagrants in Japan several times, but breeding in Hokkaido was confirmed in 1994. They live as resident birds in large, remote forests, rocky areas, and wastelands, and have territories all year round. Their plumage is reddish-brown or cream-colored, with irregular stripes and spots all over. Their large and powerful bodies make them the most powerful nocturnal raptors.

フクロウ目フクロウ科の鳥（イラスト）。全長約72cm。とくに雌は大きく，翼の開張1.8m，体重4kgに達するものがある。極地圏を除くユーラシア大陸の大部分と北アフリカに分布する。日本では迷鳥として数回記録があったが，1994年に北海道での繁殖が確認された。人里離れた大森林，岩場，荒地に留鳥としてすみ，一年中テリトリーをもっている。羽色は赤みのある黄褐色かクリーム色で全体に不規則な縞や斑がある。体が大きく力が強いので，もっとも強力な夜の猛禽（もうきん）ということができる。
