Utaemon Ichikawa

Japanese: 市川右太衛門 - いちかわうたえもん

Actor. Born in Kagawa Prefecture. Real name Asai Zennosuke. He started Japanese dance at the age of five, and became a disciple of the kabuki actor Ichikawa Udanji at the age of six, taking the name Ichikawa Uichi. In 1925, he joined Makino Productions, changed his name to Utaemon, and became a popular star. In 1927, he became independent and established Ichikawa Utaemon Productions. The "Hatamoto Taikutsu Otoko" series, which began in 1930, captivated period drama fans with its gorgeous costumes, crescent scar on his forehead, and sophisticated dance and kabuki movements, and became a hit role both before and after the war. In 1936, he left Utaemon Productions and joined Shinko Kinema, then moved to Daiei in 1942, Toyoko in 1949, and Toei in 1951, but he continued to play the role of "Takutsu Otoko" mainly, and the series ran for 31 films.

俳優。香川県出身。本名浅井善之助。５歳で日本舞踊を始め，６歳で歌舞伎の市川右団次の弟子となり，市川右一を名乗る。1925年マキノ・プロに入社，右太衛門と改称し人気スターとなる。1927年独立して市川右太衛門プロダクションを設立，1930年に始まる《旗本退屈男》シリーズは，豪華な衣装，額の三日月傷，踊りと歌舞伎で洗練された立回りで時代劇ファンを魅了，戦前・戦後を通じて当り役となった。1936年右太衛門プロを解散し新興キネマへ，1942年大映，1949年東横，1951年東映へと移ったが，もっぱら〈退屈男〉を演じ続け，31本という長期シリーズとなった。
