Actor. Born in Kagawa Prefecture. Real name Asai Zennosuke. He started Japanese dance at the age of five, and became a disciple of the kabuki actor Ichikawa Udanji at the age of six, taking the name Ichikawa Uichi. In 1925, he joined Makino Productions, changed his name to Utaemon, and became a popular star. In 1927, he became independent and established Ichikawa Utaemon Productions. The "Hatamoto Taikutsu Otoko" series, which began in 1930, captivated period drama fans with its gorgeous costumes, crescent scar on his forehead, and sophisticated dance and kabuki movements, and became a hit role both before and after the war.
