An infectious disease caused by a virus belonging to the arbovirus group that grows in the body of a type of tick ( Dermacentor andersoni ) and is transmitted to humans through the tick's bite. It is distributed from Canada to the Rocky Mountains of North America, and was previously confused with a mild form of Rocky Mountain spotted fever, but was recognized as an independent disease in 1930. It is most common in May and June. The incubation period is 3 to 6 days, and symptoms include back pain, leg muscle pain, chills, headache, and photophobia (sensitivity to bright light), as well as abdominal pain, vomiting, tachycardia, and conjunctival congestion.
