Compression molding

Compression molding

This is the most common molding method for plastics, in which the molding material is placed in the cavity of a mold and molded by applying pressure and heat. It is mainly used for thermosetting resins. Compression molding is done with an automatic or manual press. The heating temperature is 140-180°C, and the hydraulic pressure is about 100-200 kilograms per square centimeter. In the case of thermosetting phenolic resin or melamine resin, water is generated during heat curing, which causes swelling on the surface of the molded product, so the mold is opened for a short time at the beginning of molding to reduce the pressure and release the gas. Powdered materials may be used, but in reality, the powder is preformed into tablets and the mold is preheated and cooled to increase molding efficiency. Transfer molding is a more automated version of compression molding.
