Tyndall phenomena

Tyndall phenomena
There are many books that refer to this phenomenon as the Tyndall phenomenon*. When a large number of small particles are present in a homogeneous, transparent medium, the light beam incident on it is scattered by the particles, making it possible to observe the path of the light beam from a direction other than that of the incident light. This is why the path of light becomes visible when a thin beam of light is shone on a colloidal solution. This is called the Tyndall phenomenon, or Tyndall effect*, and a quantitative treatment of it was given by Lord Rayleigh. See also Rayleigh scattering*. Tyndall demonstrated that this scattering effect does not occur in human breath, which provided support for Pasteur's theory. See Julius Komlow, The Story of a Discovery that Changed Medicine, translated by Suwa Kunio (Chugai Igakusha), among others.
