Plateau basalt

Japanese: 台地玄武岩 - だいちげんぶがん（英語表記）plateau basalt

This type of basalt makes up the vast lava plateaus found all over the world, and because these basalts share certain commonalities across their regions and formation times, they are specifically called plateau basalts. They are thought to have formed when the primary magma of tholeiitic or alkaline basalt flowed out from numerous narrow vents or overflowed from huge cracks in the earth's crust, spreading in all directions and solidifying. The overall thickness of the plateau basalt is extremely large, but the thickness of a single basalt layer ranges from a few meters to around 20 meters, and in rare cases it can reach 100 meters, and a huge number of basalt layers are stacked almost horizontally to form a thick basalt plateau as a whole [Katayama et al.: 1970]. ⇒ Lava plateau

世界各地の広大な熔岩台地を構成している玄武岩で，これらの玄武岩は分布地域や生成時代を通じてある種の共通性をもっているので，特に台地玄武岩と呼ばれる．ソレアイト質またはアルカリ玄武岩の本源マグマが多数の狭い火道から流出したり，地殻に生じた巨大な割れ目から溢れ出て四方に広がり固結したものと考えられている．台地の玄武岩全体の厚さは極めて大きいが，一枚の玄武岩層の厚さは数mから20mくらいで，まれに100mに達し，膨大な数の玄武岩層がほぼ水平に重なり全体として厚い玄武岩台地を形成している［片山ほか : 1970］．⇒熔岩台地
