A marine fish of the family Polypedidae in the order Perciformes. Kihassoku is the name used mainly in Wakayama Prefecture, and it is said that this name was given because this fish is difficult to cook and requires a lot of wood to cook. It is also called Kihaccho in Yuasa, Shuriki in Miwazaki, Nabekosage in Wakaura, Sonewase in Nagasaki, and Washidai in Kagoshima. It is widely distributed from southern Japan to the western Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean, living in rocky areas 5 to 50 meters deep along the coast. It reaches a total length of 25 cm. スズキ目ヌノサラシ科の海産魚。キハッソクはおもに和歌山県下各地の名称であり,この魚は煮えにくく,煮るのに〈木八束〉も必要であるためこの名がついたといわれる。また和歌山県湯浅ではキハッチョウ,同県三輪崎でシュウリキ,同県和歌浦でナベコサゲ,長崎県でソネワセ,鹿児島県でワシダイと呼ばれる。南日本から西部太平洋,インド洋まで広く分布し,沿岸の深さ5~50mの岩礁域にすんでいる。全長25cmに達する。体色は美しい黄色に,黒褐色の横帯がやや斜めに走っている。
