Chu Si-gyŏng (Chu Shi Jing)

1876‐1914
Korean linguist. Born in Fongsan, Hwanghae Province. Modern research into the Korean language was launched in earnest by Zhou Shijing, following on from Yi Bong-un and Yu Kil-jun. In 1896, while working as a proofreader for the Independent Newspaper, he established the Korean Language Association and began research and standardization into the writing of the Korean language. He later worked as a teacher at various schools and as a member of the government's National Literature Research Institute, while also developing a national national literature movement to organize, popularize, and develop the language unique to the nation, and devoted himself to scientific language research for that purpose. His major works include National Language Grammar and Phonetics (1908) and National Language Grammar (1910).

朝鮮の言語学者。黄海道鳳山の出身。朝鮮語の近代的研究は，李鳳雲，兪吉濬（ゆきつしゆん）のあとをうけて周時経によって本格的に開始された。1896年《独立新聞》の校正係をしながら〈朝鮮文同式会〉を作り朝鮮語表記の統一と研究に着手し，その後も各種の学校の教員や政府の国文研究所委員をしながら，民族固有のことばを整理･普及･発展させる民族的国文運動を展開し，そのための科学的言語研究に尽力した。主著に《国語文典音学》(1908)，《国語文法》(1910)がある。
