[Died] May 12, 2009. Paris. French director, actor, and scriptwriter. He led French theater after World War II. In 1950, he founded the theater company Théâtre de la Comédie in Lyon, and attracted attention with its performances of Arthur Adamov's works. His first performance in Paris in 1957 was a successful production of Adamov's Paolo Paoli (1957), and in the same year, he moved to the Théâtre Municipale in the suburbs of Lyon as his base, and renamed his theater company Théâtre de la Cité. Together with the set designer René Alliot, he attempted unique directing of works by William Shakespeare, Pierre Marivaux, and Jean Racine. In 1972, the French government gave the name of the Théâtre National du Populaire, which was located in Paris, to the Théâtre Municipal de Villenaud, and he became the director of the theater. He nurtured up-and-coming directors such as Patrice Chéreau, and directed films such as Louis, enfant roi (1991).
