This includes stillbirths after 22 completed weeks (154 days) of pregnancy and early neonatal deaths before one week of birth (→ neonatal deaths). The perinatal mortality rate is calculated as (number of stillbirths after 22 completed weeks of pregnancy + number of early neonatal deaths) ÷ (number of births + number of stillbirths after 22 completed weeks of pregnancy) × 1000. Japan's perinatal mortality rate was high at 46.7 in 1951, but has gradually improved and fallen to single digits, becoming an extremely low rate by international standards.
