Shun'e

Japanese:
Shun'e
[Raw] Permanent 1 (1113)
[Dead]?
A poet of the late Heian period. Also read as "Sun'e." Commonly known as Daifu-ko. The son of Minamoto no Toshiyori, he learned waka poetry from his father, but his father died when he was 17, and it seems he entered Todaiji Temple around this time. After 1160, he attended many poetry contests. His Shirakawa monastery was called Karin-en, and he gathered a wide range of congregations, including courtiers, priests, monks, and ladies-in-waiting, held monthly and special poetry gatherings, and compiled private anthologies such as "Kaen-sho." The congregation of Karin-en was a group of underground poets who held great influence in the poetry world during the transition from the Rokujo family to the Mikohidari family, and Toshie was a central figure in the group. As shown by his words, "Poems should be written as if water was being poured on a five-foot tall iris" (Gotoba-in Gokuden), Toshie idealized simple beauty with plenty of emotion, and his actual style of poetry also supported this. His works are included in the Shika Wakashu and subsequent collections. Due to the popularity of the Shin Kokinshu, which arose around the time of his death, his works were considered to be of the old school, but in one sense they influenced the Shin Kokinshu, and he was welcomed into the poetry world after the Shin Kokinshu and had an impact on it. His personal collection Hayashiba Wakashu (self-selected, 78) is a complete collection, although it does not include his final works.
