A perennial plant of the Saxifragaceae family. It grows naturally on rocks along valleys in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, west of the Kinki region. The stems are 25-60 cm tall. The leaves are compound, somewhat thick and glossy, with 2-4 trifoliates. The leaflets are lanceolate, with sharp tips and double serrated edges. In May and June, the panicles produce numerous small white flowers that give off a sweet fragrance. The five petals are white, spatula-shaped, 3-4 mm long, the same length as the stamens or slightly longer, and about twice the length of the calyx lobes. There are 10 stamens. The ovary is superior and consists of two carpels. There are also varieties with pale pink flowers, which are often planted in gardens for decorative purposes.
