Indigenous people living in Yakutia, parts of the Chukotka Peninsula, and the northeastern coast of the Sea of Okhotsk. Formerly known as the Lamut people. Population: 17,200. Linguistically and culturally they are closely related to the Evenki people. The Even people living in the north depended on hunting and reindeer breeding, using reindeer sleds as a means of transportation, but the Even people living on the Sea of Okhotsk coast live a semi-sedentary life, fishing, and hunting marine mammals, using dog sleds as a means of transportation. 北アジアのヤクート地方,チュクチ半島の一部および北東部のオホーツク海沿岸に居住する先住民。旧称ラムート族。人口約1万 7200。言語,文化のうえではエベンキ族と密接な関係をもっている。生業は北方に住むエベン族では狩猟とトナカイ飼育であり,運搬手段としてトナカイぞりが用いられたが,オホーツク海沿岸のエベン族では半定住生活,漁労,海獣狩猟が行われ,ここでは運搬手段として犬ぞりが使われた。ソ連時代にはコルホーズに組込まれていた。
