The organ that produces blood cells. It varies depending on the animal; in lepidopteran insect larvae, it is in the prothorax, while in fish and urodele amphibians, it is the spleen. In other vertebrates, it is basically the same as in humans. In humans, there are many hematopoietic organs in the fetus, such as the blood islands in the yolk sac wall, the liver, the spleen, and the bone marrow, but in adults, there is only the red bone marrow. However, after a major hemorrhage, the yellow bone marrow also temporarily changes into red bone marrow and becomes a hematopoietic organ. → Related topics Blood|Red blood cells Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
