Chanson

Japanese:
Chanson
In French, it means "song." In music history, the important forms are solo and accompaniment that began in France around 1400 (main composers were Dufay and Binchois), and unaccompanied polyphonic choral works from 1500 onwards. The latter are based on contrapuntal writing and secular lyrics, but are characterized by a clearer structure and the use of onomatopoeia than the contemporary Italian madrigals. Representative composers include Josquin Des Prez and Janequin. Modern chansons as popular music often emphasize the narrative quality of the lyrics, and are made up of a couplé, which tells the story, and a refrain, which is a repeated part. In modern French "art songs" such as those by Fauré and Debussy, the term melody is used, which is equivalent to the German word lied. → Flemish School / Lied → Related topics: Arcadelt | Ockeghem | Canzone | Cabaret | Sweelinck | Under the Roofs of Paris | Piaf | Prévert | Bécaud | Montand | Lassus
