Babad Tanah Jawi (Chronicles of Java)

Although babad is usually a general term for Javanese verse chronicles, the most famous of these, the Javanese Chronicles, is written in prose. It is a chronicle commemorating the glory of the Mataram Islamic dynasty, following the tradition of the Nagarakurtagama and Pararaton, which praised the glory of the pre-Islamic Majapahit Kingdom. The first edition is thought to have been published in the latter years of the reign of Sultan Agung of the Mataram dynasty, around 1641-46, and many authors subsequently revised existing parts and added new chapters, until it took on its current form after 1757.

ババッドbabadは普通，ジャワ語の韻文で書かれた年代記の総称であるが，最も有名なこの《ジャワ年代記》は散文で書かれている。イスラム化以前のマジャパイト王国の栄光をたたえた《ナーガラクルターガマ》や《パララトン》の伝統に従い，マタラム･イスラム王朝の栄光を記念する年代記である。初版の成立年代はマタラム朝のスルタン･アグンの治世の晩年，すなわち1641‐46年ごろと考えられ，そのあとも多くの作者が既存の部分を改めたり，新しい章を付け加えたりし，現在の形になったのは1757年以後とされる。
