An old town in the middle of the Osumi Peninsula, Kimotsuki District, Kagoshima Prefecture. Most of the area was irrigated by farmland from Kasanohara on the Shirasu Plateau. The town produces rice, vegetables, sweet potatoes, and rapeseed, and livestock farming is also thriving. In January 2006, it was incorporated into Kanoya City along with Kihoku Town, Soo District, and Gohira Town, Kimotsuki District. Area: 65.86 km2 . Population: 14,012 (2003).
