An old town in the middle of the Osumi Peninsula, Kimotsuki District, Kagoshima Prefecture. Most of the area was irrigated by farmland from Kasanohara on the Shirasu Plateau. The town produces rice, vegetables, sweet potatoes, and rapeseed, and livestock farming is also thriving. In January 2006, it was incorporated into Kanoya City along with Kihoku Town, Soo District, and Gohira Town, Kimotsuki District. Area: 65.86 km2 . Population: 14,012 (2003). 鹿児島県肝属(きもつき)郡,大隅半島中部の旧町。大部分はシラス台地の笠野原で畑地灌漑(かんがい)が行われた。米,野菜,サツマイモ,ナタネを産し,畜産が盛ん。2006年1月曾於郡輝北町,肝属郡吾平町と鹿屋市へ編入。65.86km2。1万4012人(2003)。
