Philostratos - Philostratos (English spelling)

Philostratos - Philostratos (English spelling)

Four writers of the same name from the Neo-Sophist period in ancient Greece. They belonged to a family from the island of Lemnos and were active in the 2nd and 3rd centuries. Nothing is known about the first Philostratus, and no works remain. His son Flavios P. (c. 170-?) is the most important. He studied in Athens and was later sponsored by the Syrian Emperor Septimius Severus and his wife Julia Domna (170-217), but is said to have either settled in Athens or traveled to Rome in later years. His works include the Life of Apollonius of Tyana, a biography of Apollonius, a saint from Tyana in Cappadocia who lived around the 1st century and was a follower of Pythagoreanism, and other works with a marked mystical and oriental tendency, but his two volumes of The Life of the Sophist are particularly famous. The book contains biographies of not only classical sophists but also scholars who were called "sophists" in his time, making it important for understanding Greek culture during the Roman Empire. The third and fourth works by Philostratus include a collection of rhetorical studies entitled "On Paintings" and a collection of letters on the subject of love.
