Fabric made by stretching bark. Along with fur, it is one of the most primitive clothing materials. It is found in tropical regions such as Indonesia, the Pacific Ocean, the United States, and Central and South America, and is most developed in Polynesia, where it is widely known as tapa. In Japan, the old names "tafu" and "taku" are said to have come from tapa. The manufacturing method is to peel the bark of a mulberry plant, soften it by soaking it in water, and then beat it with a mallet to stretch it into a cloth. Then, a dye is applied to a woodblock and the pattern is printed on it. Today, non-woven fabrics are made using the same principle as bark cloth. [Kadoyama Yukihiro] The bark is stretched by beating it with a mallet, the surface is smoothed, and it is finished by pasting it with glue.
