Other early examples of monopoly include the lacquer and wax monopoly system of the Aizu and Yonezawa domains, and the purple root monopoly system of the Morioka domain. From the mid-Edo period onwards, the domains' finances became strained, and the increase in rice tax, which had been the basis of domain finances, came to a standstill.
