During Donizetti's lifetime, "horror operas" and "mad operas" were popular in Italy, reflecting the politically unstable state of the country, and this "Lucia" is a typical example of this kind of opera, with the highlight being the "Lucia's Madness Scene" in the second half. This work, along with "Anna Bolena" and "L'elisir d'amore," is still popular today for its elegant bel canto melodies, the greatest characteristic of Donizetti's operas. In Japan, a part of the work was introduced in 1918 at the Komagata Theater in Asakusa, Tokyo, starring Hara Nobuko, and in 1923, the Capi Italian Opera Company premiered almost the entire work. ...
