An old town on the Satsuma Peninsula in Kawanabe County, Kagoshima Prefecture. In addition to its specialty Chiran tea, it produces rice, tobacco, and livestock farming. The main settlement developed at the foot of the Satsuma Domain's samurai residences, and after the Meiji Restoration, the county office was established there. The Ibusuki-Makurazaki Line runs through the southern part of the town. An army airfield established in 1942 was the base for kamikaze units during World War II. In December 2007, it merged with Ei Town, Ibusuki County, and Kawabe Town, Kawanabe County, to become a city, forming Minamikyushu City. Area: 120.19 km2 . Population: 13,256 (2005). 鹿児島県川辺(かわなべ)郡,薩摩半島上の旧町。特産の知覧茶のほか,米,タバコなどを産し,畜産が盛ん。主集落は薩摩藩武家屋敷の麓集落として発達,明治維新後は郡役所が置かれた。南部に指宿(いぶすき)枕崎線が通じる。1942年設置の陸軍飛行場は第2次大戦中特攻隊の基地であった。2007年12月揖宿郡頴娃町,川辺郡川辺町と合併し市制,南九州市となる。120.19km2。1万3256人(2005)。
