The central city of Nile State in Sudan, in northeastern Africa. It is located at the point where the Atbara River, which originates in the Ethiopian Highlands, joins the Nile. Population 87,878 (1993). It has long been a key transportation location, and is now a thriving transportation and industrial city, being the midpoint and junction of the railway connecting the capital, Khartoum, and the port city of Port Sudan on the Red Sea, and home to the railway headquarters and rolling stock factory. It is located at an altitude of 35 meters, with an annual precipitation of around 70 millimeters, in a transition zone from semi-desert to desert.
