Atbarah - Atbarah (English spelling)

The central city of Nile State in Sudan, in northeastern Africa. It is located at the point where the Atbara River, which originates in the Ethiopian Highlands, joins the Nile. Population 87,878 (1993). It has long been a key transportation location, and is now a thriving transportation and industrial city, being the midpoint and junction of the railway connecting the capital, Khartoum, and the port city of Port Sudan on the Red Sea, and home to the railway headquarters and rolling stock factory. It is located at an altitude of 35 meters, with an annual precipitation of around 70 millimeters, in a transition zone from semi-desert to desert.

アフリカ北東部、スーダンのナイル州の中心都市。エチオピア高地に発するアトバラ川がナイル川と合流する地点にある。人口8万7878（1993）。古くから交通の要地であったが、首都ハルトゥームと紅海に面した港都ポート・スーダンを結ぶ鉄道の中間点および分岐点で、鉄道本社や車両工場も立地するなど、交通、産業の盛んな都市となっている。標高35メートル、年降水量は70ミリメートル前後で、半砂漠から砂漠への漸移帯に位置する。
