Japanese: 沓掛 - くつかけ

Karuizawa Town is an old post town in the southern foot of Mt. Asama in eastern Nagano Prefecture. With Usui Pass to the east, it was known as one of the three Asama post towns on the Nakasendo road, along with Karuizawa and Oiwake. With the opening of the Shinetsu Main Line, the town fell into disuse, but since the mid-Taisho period, villas have been developed in the surrounding area, and it is now called Nakakaruizawa, with a shopping district second only to Kyukaruizawa. It is also the junction of the Nakasendo road (National Route 18) and the Ozasa Kaido (National Route 146), which leads to the northern foot of Mt. Asama.

長野県東部，浅間山の南麓，軽井沢町にある旧宿場町。東方に碓氷峠を控え，軽井沢，追分とともに中山道の浅間三宿として知られた。信越本線の開通により宿場町としては寂れたが，大正中期から周辺に別荘地が開発されたため，現在は中軽井沢と呼ばれて，旧軽井沢に次ぐ商店街となっている。中山道 (国道 18号線) と浅間山の北麓へ通じる大笹街道 (国道 146号線) の分岐点でもある。
