"Red River"

…He rose to stardom in 1939 with his role in Stagecoach, a masterpiece western directed by Ford. He gained popularity playing the role of a "war hero" in Corregidor (1945) and Sands of Iwo Jima (1949), and was also recognized as a first-class star with his acting ability and dignity in the western Red River (1948) directed by H. Hawks, in which he played a wide range of roles from a young cowboy to an older man. In subsequent Ford films such as The Yellow Ribbon (1949), The Quiet Man (1952), and The Searchers (1956), he played the main character who longs for a "family" but is rejected from it, and in Hawks films such as Rio Bravo (1959) and Hatari! (1962), he embodied the "John Wayne myth" as a hero with human kindness that was different from the conventional perfect hero. His distinctive walking style, called the "rolling walk," was a trademark that he developed with his close stuntman friend Yakima Canute (the stunt director for Stagecoach and the man who did all of John Wayne's doubles).
